Call Summary
The City of Sugar Land is seeking artists to paint original designs on small, wooden, information boxes to be provided by the City. The boxes, which will contain information for free mental health resources, will be installed in various locations and be positioned adjacent to positive messaging embedded in the sidewalk.
 
Budget Description
Artists will receive a $500 honorarium for painting one wooden box provided by the City. Artists must deliver finished boxes to the City of Sugar Land by the specified date.
 
Project Description
A City of Sugar Land selection committee will select artists to paint a minimum of five wooden boxes to be displayed in various locations. The selection committee will determine the specific location of each artwork at a later date.
 
Artwork Goals
Sugar Land is partnering with To Write Love on Her Arms, a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. The boxes are designed to distribute information across the city in the hopes of reaching people in a time of need.
 
Artwork Location Description
A minimum of five locations in the City of Sugar Land to be determined by the Selection Committee at a later date.
 
Site History
Sugar Land, located in eastern Fort Bend County, is approximately 20 miles southwest of downtown Houston. It was incorporated in 1959. A full-service municipality, Sugar Land, provides the highest quality of affordable services to meet the needs of its residents. Master-planned communities and welcoming neighborhoods enhance home values and create a sense of belonging. The community offers outstanding schools, libraries, civic organizations and other resources that make Sugar Land a great place to work, live and raise a family.
 
Eligibility
• Both professional artists and hobbyists are encouraged to apply.
• This opportunity is limited to local and regional artists (living/working within 70-mile radius of Sugar Land, Texas).
• An artist may apply for more than one commission.
• Staff members, board members, advisory board members, City Council members and/or family members of City of Sugar Land are ineligible to apply.
 
Application Requirements
Letter of Interest: 500 word maximum
Tell us about your experience as a painter and why you’d like to decorate one of these boxes. Please also include a short description of your proposed design concept.
 
Artists are NOT allowed to apply in teams.

Selection Process
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES & DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
• Selected artists should be prepared to coordinate with the City of Sugar Land to finalize the design.
• “Light” is the theme of this call as a light house is the long time symbol of the way forward.
• Submitted designs must not violate copyright restrictions.
• All submissions must be provided digitally.
• Artists may submit up to 5 design concepts for consideration.
• Boxes will be provided to artists who must pick them up from City Hall as directed.
• Images of the designs for the wooden boxes are not available at this time, but will be provided to artists selected for this commission. Examples of typical structures are provided below and may be used as a guide.
• Artists must deliver finished boxes to the City of Sugar Land as directed.

SPECIFICATIONS
• Box designs may be representational or abstract, but may not contain advertising, religious art, sexual content, negative imagery or convey political partisanship.
• Red may be used only as a minor accent color.
 
Selection Criteria
Criteria used to select artwork includes, but is not limited to: appropriateness of work to the community and project, durability of materials, aesthetic quality, site suitability, quality of previous work and commitment to carrying out the project.

Friday, June 25, 2021- Call for Entries/RFP Opens
Friday, July 9, 2021 at 5:00 pm CST- RFP Closes
Friday, July 16, 2021- Artists Notified by this Date.
Monday, August 2, 2021- Boxes Made Available to Artists by this Date
Monday, August 30, 2021- Boxes Must be Completed and Delivered by this Date
